　　西元3世紀創立教徒全部吃素

　　摩尼教產生於西元3世紀中葉，由波斯人摩尼創立。摩尼教創立後，即在波斯境內廣為傳播，並迅速進入北非、歐洲、小亞細亞、中亞一帶。據說，摩尼本人在遊歷中亞時曾到過中國西北地區，但摩尼教正式傳入中國則是在唐武則天時期（西元7世紀末）。

　　由於摩尼教宣揚光明，在傳入中國後，逐漸被稱為“明教”。類似於佛教，明教教徒也要食素，因為他們認為素食中包含的光明較多，吃素可以凈化自身的靈魂。因而，除非是叛教者，一般都嚴格遵守素食的戒律。《倚天屠龍記》第十四章中提及，張無忌見到所謂明教徒的朱元璋、徐達一夥在吃牛肉，為之一凜。張無忌的吃驚正反映了明教的教義之嚴。
